Thing is, I traveled on first AC a while back and it does save you some money compared to the air-fare between destinations but there are visible problems that have to be taken care of.

First off, these guys have Coupes which may have 2 or 4 berths, and the Railways do not apply any brain in assigning the Coupes. They would randomly give you a 4 berth coupe when there is a couple and may be a 2 berth one when there are kids (and they have berths too). All this was topped by the fact that the AC was not working.

Also, I tried searching around for what facilities (in terms of food, services etc.) are provided, but looks like it ain't documented. So may be you can update the post above and copy/paste what I write here:
------
Facilities:

First AC would generally mean some free snacks (they give you a water bottle, tomato soup and may be biscuits with tea). Now, you have to be extra careful in not giving money for any of these, as they're all provided free of cost. Again, it would be worthwhile to check with the on-call attendant in the coach and may be the TTE about any extra (or under) facilities you are being provided. Indian Railways is very poor at documentation.
------

All in all, it is indeed much more comfortable, but comes with a price. As Sri correctly said, BIAL's distance is one of the best reasons why you would not travel to 3 hour air-destinations from Bangalore - since you have to add another 4 hours with a lot of tension involved (and extraa-money too, Taxi costs are at least another 1000 bucks).

yes the difference is not much, but in bangalore you waste easily 4 hours going to and coming back from international airport. if you calculate that and your air travel time, it will still be about 6-7 hours! :)
